비욘세와 테일러 스위프트부터 U2의 멤버까지 참여하여 총 300명이 넘는 아티스트들, 저널리스트들, 산업 관계자들이 참여했다고 하는 이 리스트는 각자의 참여자들이 자신들의 최고의 앨범 50장을 선택하고, 순위별로 점수가 차등 분배되어 합산되어 발표됐다고 한다. 총 3,000장이 넘는 앨범들이 한 표 이상을 받았다고 한다. 2003년판과 2012년판에는 언급되지 않았던 154장의 앨범이 추가됐다고 하며, 2000년대 이후 앨범 중 86장이 포함됐다고도 한다. 이 리스트에는 내가 좋아하는 평론가인 Stephen Thomas Erlewine이나 Robert Christgau가 참여하기도 했다.



 그렇게 해서 만들어진 이 리스트는 2003년의 초판 리스트와 비교했을 때 정말 많이 달라졌다. 500위부터 1위까지 이 리스트를 한 장씩 찬찬히 살펴봤을 때 우선 최신 앨범들이 정말 많이 포함됐다는 점이 눈에 띄었고, 흑인 아티스트들과 여성 아티스트들의 선전도 인상적이었다. 90년대와 2000년대 락 앨범들은 기존과 비슷한 지위를 유지한 것 같고, 60년대~70년대의 기존의 명반들은 지위가 다소 낮아진 것 같다. 평론가들과 마니아들이 좋아할 만한 락과 재즈 앨범들도 그 수가 많이 준 듯하다. 이런 흐름에 의해서 엘비스 프레슬리, U2, 브루스 스프링스틴에 대한 평가가 낮아지고 조니 미첼, 스티비 원더, 데이비드 보위, 닐 영은 더 많은 인정을 받은 것 같다. 프린스와 마이클 잭슨에 대한 흑인들의 지지도 느낄 수 있었다. 다수의 투표를 받아서 집계되는 이런 리스트가 그럴 수밖에 없듯이 일관성은 없지만 정말 재밌는 리스트였다. 시대가 변하고, 이런 리스트를 받아들이는 나도 변한다는 것을 느낄 수 있었다.
